I bought an AquaC EV 240... kool. I bought it with a MAG 18 to "overdrive" it. I only have a 90gal but I'd consider it a heavy-load sps type of setup. What exactly do you do to modify it? Just buy a ball-valve to go between the pump and skimmer? I've never done any plumbing work in the home or on a fish tank. I assume... the purpose of the valve is to control the flow from the pump. Any pics anybody has would help too. TIA fellas.

Hi. You shouldn't need a ball/gate valve between the pump and the skimmer. The EV240 should be able to handle all the flow from a Mag18. You will simply have to set your exit gate valve more open then you would the regular Mag12 pump. I think no special plumbing is required.

I've seen the 240 "straight piped" with a Mag 18 with the exit valve fully opened. However, getting a gate valve between the pump and skimmer isn't a bad idea. You can dial back the pump's output to the skimmer in case the pump is too powerful. It's very straight forward to pump. You can get inline barbed ball valves for the easiest install (simply cut the vinyl tubing and insert this ball valve to connect the two cut ends). Remember to use a hose clamp! Here is the simple valve I'm talking about:

Metal, even SS, will rust. It's "okay", but plastic clamps are cheap and do not rust. I couldn't find these valves at HD or Lowes, but you might have better luck. Barb fittings that size are uncommon.
