Many people light them opposite the display tank photoperiod.

I have the refuge lights turn off/on opposite of my actinics as they are on 12 hours a day so the fuge light is on the opposite 12 hours.

When the lights are off for the fuge, the algae in there gives off relatively more oxygen for the fish when they are active so thats why people run it like this but some types of macro(Caulerpa I believe) go "sexual" and completely disintegrate over night polluting your tank so people keep the lights on 24/7 so that this doesn't happen.

Mine is on reverse from the display and my cheato grows like crazy

mine as well comes on when tank lights go off
