How many people have had really bad leaks?
List the cause of the leak, damage it caused, neighbor issues etc...
Also list about how many gallons was lost?

I'm just curious how MR reefers dealt with these issues and the kind of damage it can cause.

I never really experience (knock on wood) a bad leak, just slow leaks that I caught in time.

Good idea for a thread.

When i made my first DIY sump (was about 20 gallons) it wasnt sealed as well as i thought it was.. after being full for about a day and a half it sprung a massive leak. Luckily i was home, so right away i used a mag 3 to pump out what didnt leak out yet with a mag3.. i plumbed it right out the window.. Luckily the leak was concentrated on the upper part of the seam.. Honestly i think i would have been screwed if it was on the lower part and if i had livestock in that thing. I dont know what to do if my display would spring a leak...
..probably try and scatch as much water as possible in a bucket and keep the livestock there while i set up a spare tank

Wana talk bad leaks??? Got up one morning back in the early 80's to find my 55 g tank empty. Straight down to the basement it all went. Cause - year old Odell tank seal towards the bottom sprung a leak. Loss was minimul because it was a fresh water tank. Stuff in the basement don't remember what it was exactly, but nothing major. Had recently bought that house, and hadn't made any upgrades. Thank God

I left my faucet on overnight while filling a 25 gal bin of R/O water. The problem was that I forgot to turn it off when I left for work the following morning. I came home from work to a pond in my living room and about 5 hours later, the mess was cleaned up.

NOT FUN !

me me me!

i decided to feed my harlequin shrimp a cc star. after cutting two legs off the cc star i threw the rest in the fuge(something i had done before). well i went to work the following day and came home to a half empty tank. it seems the cc star blocked the fuge output and the fuge just kept overflowing.

boy was my downstairs neightbor pissed. i guess that's what i get for choppin' sh!t up

My tale is on the homepage.

I once left on my RO/DI unit while I went for dinner and drinks. Totally forgot about it in my quest for beer. Came home 5 hours later, drunk, to find out that I had flooded through 5 stories all the way to the basement from the top floor. My neighbors had to turn the water mains off to stop it. TALK ABOUT A BUZZ KILL! Moral to the story, always leave container in bathtub when filling RO/DI water.

Leak

My system has two tanks that share one sump. the screen that covered the return from the smaller tank fell off and a seahorse got sucked in. We were out of the country at the time. At least 30 gallons overflowed and went down to our neighbors apt. Fortunately they were doing a gut renovation so damage was not really an issue, and we are also good friends. It could have been a disaster. I've always had somebody babysit (Lissa?) the tanks since then. Most difficult part was explaining to my youngest daughter what happened to the seahorse.

Me too!! I was pissed. I was in the process of moving my tank and the live stock was in a rubbermaid bin that I was topping off. It was a REAL bad day!
