This weekend I visited a local hobbiest who has been collecting his own water out of the ocean for the past 30 years with no reasonable problems. I was immediately intrigued (this is Boston mind you), as I had never seen a small system that ran sea water. After collecting his water he filters it with carbon and canister filters as well as Ozone.

I have to say that his system was impressive and considering the fact that I live on the water, I am going to have a go at it.

The system that I will experiment on is a 54 AG bowfront. The system usually has 15-20 ppm nitrate depite the low bioload and monthly RO/DI water changes. I will have my backup system in the basement should anything go to hell.

Anyone else have any (extended) experience with this?

Wish me luck!

For the duration of this hobby I have always collected fresh ocean water on incoming tide, all of my corals and anemones are more open and full the day after a water change than any other time, I haven't ever had a problem with parasites, or and other major chemical problems for that matter. So I sugguest you go for it see how it works for you and report back.
