JonnyJ that is a cool looking pipefish. For some reason I don't have a lot of luck with banded pipefish and I have had about 5 of them. Yours looks great.

My favorite are bluestripes and they live their normal lifespan of about 3 or 4 years and spawn the entire time. I should get a Janss pipefish in a few days as the wholesaler doesn't have one this week, but he ordered one for me.
Aquadicted, you can get pipefish anyplace. Fishtown, not far from you has a couple of them and that is where I got the dragon pipefish.

pipe fish are in they same family as seahorses correct?

I had a seahorse in a 20gal soft tank. There were a couple fish in the tank too. All was well (feeding 2x a day) for about 5 months when she started sinking to the bottom. I quarantined her but she died quickly.

Are pipe fish more "reef safe" as in they can get along and feed with the other fish?
do pipefish eat frozen foods?

Pipefish are the same family as seahorses and they are reefsafe. Some eat frozen foods but I would not rely on that as seahorses and pipefish don't have a stomach, just a short tube so they can't store food and need to eat tiny portions all day. That is how they were designed to eat and they don't care to change to suit our schedules. They do better in a more mature, not to sterile tank and live foods are prefered if you want to keep them for their entire normal lifespan which is what we should strive for with all our fish. Keeping any fish one or two years is a failure as all fish live much longer than that.
