How can I tell for sure if my urchin has died?

if all the spines fall off, it's long dead. What kind of urchin? If it's a tuxedo, you'll see his tentacles out when he's alive, which he uses to grab on to things and move around. If you don't see those, it could be dead. Take him out and if he's giving off a really strong odor, he's dead.
