the skimmer thread. great thread. filled with alot of great reviews and information. one of the most important aspects of keeping your tank to thrive. probably by far the most informative threads made on MR. the most views, commented on, and maybe oldest thread still currently being posted on.... ONE PROBLEM...

10/26/2005 this thread was started on...
1667 posts later....
& 153, 884 views...

do we really think someone new on here on MR who wants to know what skimmer they should get is going to want to look at 1667 posts and over 45 pages long?(i have 100 posts per page) probably not. we need a better solution...

i really think we need a actual "skimmer" tab. kind of like where the marketplace is, lighting guide, measurments, and all of those are on the front page. if not, maybe a skimmer thread section broken down better, by either price or brand. price i would say is better. we need something where people can just do this...

click "skimmers" section
then click one of the links...

$1-100 Skimmers
$100-200 Skimmers
$200-300 Skimmers
$300-400 Skimmers
$500-600 Skimmers
$600+ Skimmers

after clicking a link, a list of reviews of skimmers that qualify for each section. im SURE it would be filled up quickly by everyone, but at least it would be organized much better then one giant thread ya know?

on the old skimmer thread some of those skimmers are hard to find now, or retired and new models are out now, and some of the actual companys are even out of business.

everyone has been posting and starting threads recently about skimmers. what should i buy? whats the BEST skimmer? what skimmer would work best for me? does anyone know about this skimmer? on and on... and then everytime, the same information is given. why keep typing the same answers...when we could make this happen, and a simple click & paste.

just an idea....anyone agree?

edited: just a side note, i dont think a simple "skimmer thread 2" is needed. it would be unorganized. i think something larger, like a whole section for skimmers is needed...

I once posted a thread on skimmers asking which is a good buy, good price, etc... No one really answered my questions, tried reading all the other post and got annoyed. I think your idea is fantastic. I finally ended up with a deltec tc 2060 (purchased from nerac 2011). More than what i wanted to spend, but really really happy with it.

agreed. lets face it, if you make a thread asking about skimmers on which to get, everyone will post what they have and say how great it is and maybe a few will actually try to help. you never get your answer. people telling others how there skimmer they own is great is NOT helping. thats wonderful that your skimmer is running good and your happy with it, but thats NOT the question. i think it would be easier to just have a whole section where you can read reviews by price range because face it...its the price that holds people back from getting the biggest and best. everyone has a max price...

There are so many skimmers available for every type of budget that it would be next to impossible to say which would be best for your application. Thats why one should always try and do research and make sure that the skimmer they are interested in will.
1. Fit within budget.
2. Fit within the space allowed.

Everyone can say this skimmer is this... and this skimmer is that... but in the end what you are still going to do is export nutrients and waste by skimming. Besides all else how can one really do a comparison between skimmers. most will not go out and buy multiple skimmers just so that they can do a test... then sell it to what get back less than what they paid for it just so that they give an opinionated test.

That just doesn't make sense. So it's just do a little research and see what would make the best sense for you, your tank and planning.
