Anyone care to share any links or actual recipes for homemade rocks?

I would like to start a small strictly zoa tank with unique shaped rockwork. It is just in idea form now and I am not ready yet.... but I have a slight obsession with zoas and feel that I cannot add many more to our tank currently, for overtime I think I'd kick myself for it. It's like when I see a different one anywhere I have to have it:eek:.. so the idea was planted in my mind.

There is info in here on how to do it..it starts about midway down the page and goes through to the end of the article.

I have a reefing friend who did make his own rock and his main complaint was the LONG amount of time it takes to cure the rock as the PH is incredibly high when this stuff is curing. He made some very interesting shapes including using wire coat hangers to mold arches.
The other issue with homemade rocks is that eventually they do start to crumble. Just something to keep in mind.

You can cure it in your toilet's water basin. Just put it back there and let it sit for 6 months by the time it's done all the nasty phosphates and chemicals from curing will have leached away. Plus the water changes every time you flush!

We keep finding ways to make use of that little basin. I used to keep worms there and now you think of keeping rocks there. I am sure soon we will find a way to put oranmental animals/plants there. :tongue1:

this wont work if you have a good amount of rock to cure, the rock will displace the water in the toilet tank and it wont flush properly. I tried it, trust me.

You tried that? :biglaugh:

yeah I heard about it from someone on this site.
It made a mess of the tank also, the rock will crumble a bit as
it cures. it also stained the inside of the tank, so I guess that shows you definitely need to cure it for a long time, as BoB says 6 months sounds good.
