ok here is some trivia for all my fish experts and aquarium analysts out there. so if you read my profile you would find out that i have a 20 gallon long nano without a sump right now but had an interesting question. I tried this on a freshwater system before, but if I was to add an 100 gallon sump to this tank, would i be able to "overstock" the tank with livestock? Meaning, right now I have 2 firefish. Would i be able to add 2 clownfish, a blenny, a goby, more snails etc. Not so much that it would crowd the tank, but more than what a normal 20L would be able to handle. I was wondering because I work at a petco and every year theres a dollar/gallon sale and was thinking about investing in another large tank for the house and a large sump/display tank would be really nice. Do you think this is fine for saltwater? Will it work? Thanks for any advice. Please add in why you think it will/wont work with logical answers. Thank you again.

From a waste stand point I think it would work. You wouls also need to oversize the skimmer and add live rock to the sump for additional waste breakdown area. I think where you will have issues is in the behavior aspect. With lots of fish you will run into territorial issues (lots of fights) and the fish may live stressed (illness issues) because of the compatition and lack of personal space.

first, when is the dollar a gallon sale at petco, and is it at all locations?

secondly, i would prepare the larger tank...connect it, run it for a while, make it nice and pretty, then take all your livestock out of the little tank and throw them in the bigger tank.

do you have a pic of the tank now?

also , X if they purchase the larger display, then everything else has to be bought, skimmer, lights, stand, ect. it gets expensive.

unless of course you want to weld a stand, use hydroponic lights, and buy a bushel of Home depot clamps to hold it all together.

1st to X, the dollar sale at Petco should be within the next 2 months. Im in CT so I dont know about other places. It seems like everyone on this forum is a west coaster. i believe it is at most locations, just an employee not a manager. Corporations suck, I only work there bc they don't have anyone else who knows how to take care of fish and i feel guilty leaving.

2nd. The livestock that I listed, weren't specifically for my 20L. It was a bioload question. I dont think I'd be able to keep more than my firefish, a mandarin, and one other bottom feeder without bioload issues. I used a 20 high for my freshwater experiment and had over 25 fish who lived well over 2.5 years all healthy. When I took apart the tank, kept 8 of them, gave the rest away to LFS. I think someone told me "an inch of fish per 5-10 gallons of water" but right now my firefish fulfill that requirement and theyre getting along fine for now.

What kind of communities have people seen out there for 20L tanks? I dont personally know anyone who has one.

weld a stand? hydroponic lights?..what are you talking about? i'm not sure if kydsexy is in his 30's and lives at home with his mommy, so he can afford whatever he wants for his tank or not...so who knows. home depot stuff might be best for him.
...are you almost finished insulting my setup?

keep the insults to a minimum then please, and i won't need thicker skin. and FYI, if he adds a 100 gallon sump and a larger bio-load to his 10 gallon aquarium, he will need a bigger skimmer, and a stand to put the 100 gallon sump on.

Not sure if you already have one or not, but a mandarin should only be kept in a large tank with lots of live rock and few competitors for the pods etc it needs to thrive. The tank should also be a mature tank, probably over 6 months old at least. I would not advise one for a 20G, though, if your oversized sump really was 100G and you were able to fill it with a lot of live rock as a source of pods (and the water that flowed over it went straight to the tank, not through a skimmer), then it might be possible.

The firefish would be serious competitors to the mandarin for any pods btw (which would move slower than they did).

Not saying it can't be done, just that a lot of thought would have to go into it. Plus some careful preparation.
