I have a 90 gallon tank with about 100lbs of live rock. I currently use the 48" 2x65W Current USA PowerCompact Single Satellite Fixture for my lighting. Is that enough light or should I upgrade to the 4x65w?

What are you trying to keep?

You might be able to keep some sofited with the 4x65 IMO. The 90 is a deep tank and MH's would be a much better choice.

is there any way to do MH without hanging them from the ceiling?

Sure. You can retrofit them into a canopy (whatever kind your tank manufacturer makes, or something DIY), buy them in a pre-made canopy like what Hamilton sells (used to sell? Haven't seen them around in a while, not sure), or even get ones that have legs that stand off the tank, like this one http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_lig ... sp?CartId=

Right, they are not photosynthetic. They don't really entirely on the light to survive, much like your fish!

You dont need more light than you have for fish/snails. You can actually get less light and use normal output lights.
