Yes. Green hair algae can completely cover you rock, glass, corals, whatever if left unchecked.
Green hair algae is usually a sign of high nutrients. The high nutrients can be caused by overfeeding, poor water quality or not using RO/DI water, high bio-load in the tank, and others.
I would take that rock out and scrub the GHA off of it. Then start trying to figure out where your nutrient source is coming from.
well i havent seen any anywhere else except this one rock. i keep my glass really clean so its staying off of that. could it be because of my macro algae in my fuge?
Macro will help keep this algae at bay. This algae is not dangerous to fish, though it can overgrow and smother corals if you let it. It is only a problem because it is a nusiance and can get out of hand and very difficult to get rid of. It is much easier to prevent it from spreading than to get rid of it once it has already become established. So if I were you I would scrub that rock and just keep an eye on the tank and make sure none pops up anywhere else.
I use a toothbrush and I bought a hand held scrub brush from home depot. Any brush will do, really, just make sure it hasn't been used with any chemicals. Your safest bet is to buy new, and use it only for the aquarium.
