Brings up the age old question on releasing bio engineered organisms into the wild. Europe is against any introduction of crops that are modified, whereas the US does it everywhere. In creating a super strain of dinoflagellate that is resistant to heat, cold and other extremes means creating a plague like organism that could get everywhere and out compete natural species, like a red tide, that wipes out everything else. These things are so difficult to predict. On the flip side, husbandry has created so many domesticated strains, and agricultural cross breeding has created many beneficial super foods, which has starved off world hunger, or malnutrition. Perhaps the use of CRISPR would be more amenable to international appeal.
