per forum advice im going to try adding kalk to my 2 part dosing to keep ph stable. Im not going to invest in a kalk reactor right away so that leaves me with the option to drip via gravity fed or through my top off.

which is safer, "better" to dose calk, gravity fed in a separate container, or mixed into my top off container?

a little insight on both would be nice. I know the main concern is not to pull up the gunk that settles to the bottom so I will make sure to place the intake midway in the container.

I am planning on switching from the JBJ top off to using the Apex breakoutbox and float switches, is there anyone out there running kalk on their apex controlled top off?

yah, i am running kalk mix in my top off water. google a "diy apex break out box" if your a diy guy or get a breakout box from apex. good investment. dosing kalk with apex is pretty safe. first you have PH to monitor PH level and stop ATO when ph reach above 8.40. second you can put multiple float switch to monitor sump level. shut off ato pump in certain water level. dont see why you need JBJ ato when u have a apex :fishhit:

thanks for the post, I just recently invested in my full apex and have been using the JBJ before that. I picked up the breakout box the other day but I am still trying to find the best float switches to use with it. I know autotopoff.com has recommended ones.

SO, I think I am going to use my top off to dose the kalk, what about using vinegar as well? Does anybody have the program for their apex top off with the PH statement? Im still new to the programming.

Yeah. I am using the pressure switch with their skimmate locker on my reefangel. Very happy with it. That would give you a nice mount plus the mechanical backup.

One thing to keep in mind with the mechanical float valve is the power of the pump feeding it could still push water through of the valve is closed...you'd need to test it. But it looks good.

Hard to go wrong with the pressure switch and magnetic mount :)

I learned a while ago to do things once and do them right when it comes to reef equipment. Im using a regular aqua lifter pump currently, compared to my cousins Tunze Oso top off, it pumps alot slower than his does.

So the AVAST marine top off, dosing kalk top off water controlled through the Apex SHOULD do it for me? anything else I should think of before placing the order?

my goal here is to use all of this equipment on my 150gal upgrade this winter. So I want to purchase equipment that will last me and not fail me.

thanks again

post from jerl always sound entertaining and true.

but damn. another 80 bucks for that float switch system...? no thanks. go ebay and get those cheap float switch. do a sump low and high setting. all the redundancy you need with just few bucks. or get the Digital Aquatics Float Switch Kit if you dont have any mounting option.

I evaporate a little more than a gal or so a day 1 US gallon =3785.411ml
I dose my KALK threw a 5gal container & a BRS 50ml doser and set my APEX to

Fallback OFF
Set OFF
OSC 000:00/000:30/009:30 Then ON
If pH > 08.30 Then OFF

This doses 25ml every 10 minuts for a total of 3600ml ever 24 hours and my Tunzi ATO fills in the gap.
I like it set up this way because I can adjust my APEX time for my needs.
So far so good.

I have 5 gal RODI mixed with 5 TEAspoons kalk that sat over night.

I was thinking I could just run an aqua lifter pump on a timer through the apex.

OR just run a gravity drip at around 1 drip every 4 seconds or so. For this, do I need to measure my evap and match it with the drip?
