I have one. Good flow rate and no waste water, but ineffective as a PO4 remover and product water yielded a high TDS. All this thing is a carbon block, a stack of Poly Filters and a basket which you can put a PO4 remover in. But as all of us know, Poly Filters are helpful at reducing PO4, but not great and there aren't any PO4 resins out there which can bring PO4 levels of tap water down to 0 with only 1 pass.(they send you Kent Phosphate Sponge with the unit which does nothing to help with PO4)
The filters DO NOT last as long as they advertise.
If you were going to do this, I would highly suggest pre-filtering the unit. Place a couple of micron cartridges before the unit. Then after the unit, I would do a DI cartridge. When I ran it that way, I was changing the micron cartridges monthly and the DI resin every 2 months. This helped the unit's filters last longer and did a better job at dropping my PO4 levels. The problem was adding a DI cartridge slows your water production.
Not worth the price IMO/IME

the one piece I referred to in our discussion has a combination of cartridges that can be recharged 100x - They were at MACNA and I can't for the life of me remember it's name. One huge DI UNit and a phosphorous chamber and a white one that I beleiev was for Po4 - I'll see if I can find the info and post here.

Clownlover, you being in Brooklyn, you really can get away with bypassing your RO filter on your system and simply used the micron, carbon and DI. Our water is low enough in TDS that this does work. There are a few guys doing it. The issue is your DI resin will exhaust quickly and you will find it being expensive to replace over time.
Kind of sad to see that with all going on down in the south with the drought (There is one town which is completely out of water. They send their fire engine to Alabama to fill up on water and bring it back for the town) we are here throwing away 4 gallons of water for 1 gallon we need for our fish tanks. Good to see people looking for alternatives though. This has been a topic of discussion for some time. As well as finding use for waste water rather than letting it go down the drain.
Jim, interested to see what you have there. Dave took some of my resin to regenerate with a household chemical recipe he had found, but he had no luck.
Brian, is it me, or is that a DI chamber with a sexy name?

how bout this new system from spectrapure...what are the cons to the system? its 1:1 ratio sounds really good (although it still quite a waste, why cant they recirculate the water and waste none?) . price is an issue. i think its sad that a person has to spend more cash to leave less of a footprint on this stupid earth.

I used the kold-stril in LA for couple of years, before everyone took PO4 readings. The tank looked great and I had less hair algae then I do now with a 0 TDS RO/DI water.

Kati-Ani is a giant DI unit, re-generating the media involves use of acid.
