I figure with all the old salts out there someone will no this.

Does anyone know the correct citation for Lee Ching Eng's first article in TFH describing his Nature's System? Most (including me) have always cited June 1961, but I have that issue now and it is not in there! Any ideas?

Aloha!

Never mind I found it ... its February 1961. And of course as luck would have it, we don't have that issue! :-((

Chas, are there any records of the mortality in Eng's systems? Removal, swapping or fragging of corals because of growth? Predation, fighting and biological toxicities? Water exchanges? Surely, if these smallish closed systems were as successful as we are told he must have tended to them constantly, eh?

I have a book c. 1963 that has a photo of him and a tank featured. I think there is a brief description of the methodology as well.

"The Marine Aquarium in Theory and Practice" by Dr. Cliff Emmens has a pretty decent description of Eng's system beginning on page 102.

Not in the articles I have seen. There was one in 1961 by a couple who had a tank for 8 months without any problems. From the pics I have seen, the corals were things like Fungia, Goniopora, and bubble corals and what looks like a Ricordea yuma. Thats it. No mention of husbandry other than an air bubbler. The articles were all fairly simple and not too detailed. I don't have the original 1961 article though, and Risely's book has more info on it too, which I have never seen BTW.

Aloha!
