My Tyree Toadstool has been self fragging for a while now since a piece of damaged frogspawn fell on it a while back and made a small hole. Due to the size of the Toadstool (it's huge) the weight of it near the hole had created a piece about 6" long by 1 1/2 " wide that I've left to heal along it's edges.
Tonight I decided it was time to cut it from the mother as it was only attached by a piece about 1/2" wide.
I prepped by changing my carbon (in case of slime), had a baster at the ready to suck up any extra slime and thoroughly washed a nice fresh single edged razor blade.
The cut went well :)
Then I dropped the razor blade. :(

I've been 'fishing' for it for about an hour and a half now and can't find it. I assume (yeah right) that it is somewhere between the 2 megaflows in my tank (this is the 120)..behind the largest rock structure I have. I even tied the magnet end of a Tunze p/h onto a piece of fishing line, but no luck.
Seriously concerned since I have so many wrasses that bury themselves at night..
Tank is totally trashed right now from moving rock around but can't move the biggest rock as it is supporting the main 'cave'....any suggestions?
Can I leave it there overnight without worrying about the metal causing issues?
:help:

OMG that totally sucks...wish I can advice you, but I'm at a lost for words right now. Depending on the strength of the magnet and assuming your razor is lodged between somethin or under an inch of sand you might have to totally dismantle your tank. I hope you find it soon.

BTW if you know the "area" of where it fell. Maybe you can isolate your search there. I say the best way to take it out is the magnet with a fishing line...but it has to be a good strong magnet....as soon as your wrasses don't go anywhere near it then you should be fine...a razor overnight, IMO, won't affect much of your water quality anyway.

i would not worry about the rust, but i would worry about a fish cutting themselves.

maybe you could find one of these magnetic pickup tools locally,
http://www.allmagnetics.com/hardware/pickuptools.htm

I think they would be easier to find the razor with. I would turn off all the flow so you can see down into the water.

edit: i just saw saltyflips suggestion of a magnet on fishing line, that's a good idea.

Do you have a pair of tongs, if it buried in the sand I am not sure how much help a tunze magnet will do. But a pair of tongs you can claw at the suspected area in the sand bed and see if you can trench it up and out. If it were to start rusting at least the razor edge would go first and then it would leak TDS's to the water. Hope that helps.

I would not worry as most fish are not that stupid unless they get startled. Once it get rusted the the blade is no longer a danger. I saw coral grow better on rusted steel than on rocks in the wild LOL.

Oh, I think some US navy started a project using old battle ships to build reefs but there are pros and cons controversey of them. You can search the web to find out the anwers.

Wingo, they have been doing that for years. Its kinda part of their training exercises. They place this enemy frigate at a location to drop it to add to the reef and then they conduct their manuveurs, sink the ship and their you go.

why should she not worry about the rust since powerheads with rusty screws were known to destroy reef tanks? Just out of curiosity.

She should worry because our aquariums are a small finite amount of water vs the gazillion gallons of water in the ocean where a rusted frigate probably amounts to a speck of rust.

I also dropped a razor once and couldn't find it but then I located it a few days later.
Kat, next time just cut the toadstool with a nice pair of fischer scissors.

Kathy probably didn't get any sleep worrying about the razor...or did she?....anyway what pecan said about the ocean and scissors. Well I do hope you find that razor. It's one less thing to have your mind off of. If you do leave it there....you'll be thinking about it for the rest of the...until you find it.

Salty..nah, I have better things to lose sleep over than a razor blade :)
I've been planning to do a partial reaquascaping..so it looks like now would be a good time to do it and find the blade at the same time.
I picked up a lighted 27" thin magnet yesterday and will probably tackle the issue again on Saturday afternoon as I don't think it's in an area where the fish usually go into the sandbed, so I have a little time to play with.

Warren...now you tell me!...lol :fishhit:

Tony :)hug: !!), I totally agree. No sense in betting my reef on a rusty razor blade..
