LFS going out of business

There is a large pet shop a few blocks from my home that is going out of business today.
I feel bad whenever any business goes out and the 10 or so people there of course will have no jobs.
I went there just now and filled up every space in my tank with corals that are about 75% reduced. I really don't have room for all of this stuff so it looks like re-aquascaping is in my near future.
I also bought some anemone crabs for $3.00 and some zebrafish.
I went to this store almost every day because I buy live worms and brine shrimp eggs along with frozen food.
Tomorrow I will go back and stock up on food.
It is great for me in the short term but I hate to see the place go. Their rent is over $30,000 a month and there is hardly any business anymore.
Hobby type stores always go first, if you don't have money to feed your family, you are not going to put down $100.00 for a coral or even $2.00 for worms.
It is a sign of the times and coincidentally, the electrical contractor I worked for before I retired went out of business today also.
If I had not retired when I did, I would be out of work for at least 58 weeks which is the waiting time for a construction electrician job now

It was New Hyde Park Pets but now I think it was called Puppies Puppies and More or something like that. This new owner just bought the place about 5 weeks ago, I can't believe he went out so quick.
They are selling everything so I will go back and maybe pick up some pumps or other stuff I don't need.

I used to get ro from there. One owner was complaining about not being able to track inventory. An employee was trying to sell my live rock on the side when I balked at their $9 per pound price for a crappy selection. And this store had the worst salt water section ever. That's saying something when you consider aquarium adventure is in the running.
I think that place was poorly run and given the random nature of what they had you could imagine not selling enough. The economy was probably the last straw.
I think of the places I spend my money and I prioritize healthy livestock, selection then auxiliary merchandise. That place was all merchandise. Like another muts and buts but at least there they are known for livestock.

Well where I worked went out of business yesterday.

BigDog most of the corals are gone, there are some fish left and almost all the dry goods. I will go back tomorrow for some more frozen food and maybe salt. They also have about 10 anemone crabs, 5 of which are dead. I bought 1 for $3.99.

Imbarrie, I agree with you, they never had anyone in there that knew anything. I used to order animals and take them right from the shipping boxes.
I live around the corner so it was convenient. Now I have to go a mile or two for worms.

1s of all that place SUCKS I have been there several times because my mother lives a few blocks away,out of all the times I have have been there I NEVER bought ANYTHING. The signs say 75% off going out of business today blah blah and it is TOTAL CRAP. They have NO coral whatsoever and very few saltwater fish, mostly they have small freshwater community fish that no one would want guppies,tetras etc. I asked the guy in the fish section "So the fish are all 75% off?" He replies "everything in the store is 20% off" I replied "Well the sign says 75% off and they are going out of business today" hey said "No it's going to be about another month before the store closes". There is not 1 item 75% off and even with that 20% discount they are still way over priced.

In short DO NOT waste your time this place BLOWS hence the reason they are closing.

Triggerman, that is mostly true, The store was not very good.
I get worms and food there because I live around the corner. The corals were never any good. I ordered them from them and take them from the shipping boxes.
I bought some of the corals yesterday for about 1/3rd the regular price but the corals were worth 1/3rd the price. There was a guy there with a 850 gallon tank that bought all of the corals, about 25 pieces so there is nothing left.
I picked up a few anemone crabs for $3.00 but many of them left were dead. I will go back today for some frozen food and maybe some salt.
I don't know why they have it advertised as 75% off, it is really 20% but I did get a large gorgonian for $20.00 and I scooped up hundreds of tube worms from their sumps for free.

I just came back from Pets of New Hyde park. They will close in a week or two but almost everything is 50 to 75% off. I got a bunch of salt and carbon for 50% off.
I don't use test kits but they are also 50% off as is food, pumps and calcium reactors.
