When I was researching about saltwater tanks I went to local fish stores and one of the ones I went to was:

Paradise Aquarium Inc.
66-16 Fresh Pond Road.
Ridgewood, NY 11385

I was told "Stay away from live rock, they have too many bad bacterias on the rock" by the owner, bad advice I had found out by EVERYONE else I spoke to about that statement. Then this past Saturday afternoon someone had bought me a Hippo Tang as a thank you for tuning up her car, unfortunately the Hippo Tang (named Fishkabibble) died last night meaning I had the fish a whole 33 hours. I call the fish shop and tell them what happened and they tell me "We have no policy, we dont sell sick/dying fish it has to be your tank." I offer a water sample which im then told "it doesnt matter we dont have a fish policy".

Im just letting everyone know be wary of this place or just avoid it, Ive gotten bad advice, bad fish and a "tough luck" attitude.

To tell you the truth the best fish Ive bought was from Petland:

Petland Discounts
91-08 Atlantic Ave
Pathmark Shopping Center
(718) 843-3112

The guy Bob was VERY knowledgeable and I have yet to have a problem with any fish from there. Bob was telling me he has something like 25 years experience with Salt Water.

Just an FYI all, hope this is informative!

This thread could backfire quickly, also most LFS don't have fish Guarantee's. You bought it it's yours on saltwater fish.

Basically what chief said. Most if not all will not gurantee SW fish. You have the oppurtunity to observe the fish and sometimes even ask to see the fish eat. It's the responsibility of the buyer most of the time to make sure they are getting good healthy livestock.

What size tank do you have? What are you params like? How'd you acclimate the little guy?

While your friend was well intentioned in buying you a fish, she is probably unaware of the measures we go to to ensure healthy livestock. So, for the backfiring... why didn't you QT? If anything is a good candidate for QT, it is a fish you have never had the opportunity to observe. Not only for that fish, but for the likleyhood of placing other LS at risk with disease.
No one in this area that i know of offers a guarantee on salt water fish.
Now, to play both sides of this... I will agree with your assessment of the LFS you have mentioned. IMO, not a quality store to purchase SW live stock from. My wife and I walked in there and HER exact words after looking at their tanks was "you aren't going to buy anything from this place, are you?"
We left.

Ehh maybe i jumped the gun, was just pissed at the time i posted due to the attitude i got from them. Delete this if need be.

As for parameters everythings is zero for the moment i havent tested after the dead fish. I was told they need 4 hours to acclimate so i did the hose drip method.

i have been to paradise before. the owner there is kinda rude. all they care about is selling the fish whether it's healthy or not. i've been going to this new lfs and they actually care about their fishes and make sure it's quarentined and they actually feed the fish to show you that they're eating before they sell it to you. only bad thing about my new lfs is that it's small :headache:

honestly, i'm getting less and less scared about ordering livestock online instead of only from LFS's. I kinda figure that by ordering online, you eliminate one stage of shipping & acclimation (if any is done) incurred on the fish when it gets shipped to the LFS. And i've only read happy comments about Liveaquaria.com and saltwaterfish.com also seems to be very good. between those two sites, i feel pretty well-prepped re: any new fish before I buy them.

balance this response with a desire to also give business to the quality LFS's around here that are staffed by enthusiastic reefers who are willing to shoot the breeze for a while.

Hey Pat,
Next time you go in there, ask him if he's Bob Smith from the Nassau St Petland back in 1978.
