Lightning Storm in NYC

My bedroom faces a wall but the other rooms in my apartment face downtown. Damn, did I just not see about 20 lightning strikes hitting downtown Manhattan. I got out the camera and started recording them. I heard fire engines, not sure how bad it is because I'm usually not looking downtown during a storm. But I can pretty much see all the way down to the end of the island from my apartment.

I could swear one of those bolts lasted for 2 seconds at least.

Here's a video I made.

This is looking at downtown Manhattan. Usually you would see the Empire State Building and the other buildings of the Manhattan skyline. In less than 30 seconds, it went from a clear night to the low visibility you see here. Sorry for the excitement during the video, I hope no one got hurt from this. But I was a little excited catching the lightning on camera.

You can actually hear the wind from the lightning when it hit, never noticed that before.

I made several but this came out the best. I hadn't grabbed the camera by the time the visibility got low or I could have shown you the lightning with the Manhattan skyline.

Here's a picture from the same window about 30 minutes later.

I could get better pictures especially if I go to the roof but this shows the view in the video.

I updated the post with a picture from my window. I should have aimed the camera a little more right to match up with the lightning frame. For perspective, I believe that strike hit in the right hand corner of the picture. But there were bolts all over the skyline.

One of those lighting storms rolled right over Throggs Neck last night too. Where I live I am in JFK or LaGuadia's landing path so I am watching plans flight right under the storm during their landing. One shot was so bright it lit up the plane like a spot light. The storm didnt last as long as I thought it would. Nice shots Paul.
