Hi. I am cycling my new tank (old tank of 5 years split a seam... very very sad)

anyway, have new deep sand bed with part live sand and water in the new tank.

I have about 150lb LR from my old tank in a temporary tank that needs to go to the new tank - it is COVERED with sponges of all colors, coraline algae and tons of tiny red feather dusters. It also supports tons of copepods, different types of worms and more.

Question is - do I have to drip this LR in? If I just plunk it into the new tank (same s.g., same temp, rodi water), will much of the life on this rock die?

If I do drip it in, how long would you drip it for?

Thanks!

you can just drop it in and get to work on your aquascaping.you may see a lil die off and a small cycle only cause the sponge will be exposed to air.but the minor cycle could be dealt with a couple of water changes if you get one.gl.

very cool. quickie - can i use tank sealant to bond my LR? I had some Sally Joe's sealant, but apparently, I'm all out - it's been years since I set up my last tank!
i dont think that
would work well being that the sealant needs time to cure which would me keeping te rock out of water for the mimnum of 24rs so i would rule that out.

okay - next question - the LR was covered in aptasia and bubble algae. i've been waging war against both for the last two weeks. Have scraped lots of the algae off (mostly out of the tank, but sometimes in the water, usually pulling off the bubbles w/o breaking them, but they sometimes break), but there is still some (emerald crabs will be in the new tank!)

and the aptasia - have been killing with Joe's juice then siphoning any dead mush.

question is - should I consider the water in this particular tank awful and ditch it, or should i encorporate some of it into the new system to help the rock acclimate?

i am inclined to think I should ditch this water, but was not sure...

i would ditch the old water being that there maybe spores from the bubble algae or aptiasa.all your bacteria is in the rocks.i just setup my 90gal with new sand and some new rocks.i recently started adding my old lr from my 29gal and my cycle is ending.i did put a lil sand from my old system to help speed up the cycle.but no water.

all this LR is coming from my old tank that died - had been running 5 years and a seam split while i was in Israel - my husband saved all the LR and fish and corals, but ditched all the sand. I had had a deep sand bed. :(

oh well. he is annoyed that i can't let it go - that i'm still sad about losing the dsb.

i'm a reefer, what can I do?

:)

ihave to figure out this website. then i'll post pix. i was on swf.com from the beginning and have so many posts - now i'm a newbie again. not new to reefs, but new to a site...

so sad. swf.com was great once, and now it seems to be a huge place where questions don't really get answered anymore. it just got too big, i think. so now i'm going local!

i have to figure out how to give myself a pic! maybe when my hands are prunes i'll take a break and figure out the pics!

Again, thanks on welcoming me - I have been convinced! This is a great site! I loved swf.com years and years ago, when it was all about learning and supporting each other. Now it's a great place to share very impressive pix (800 gal tanks that they make themselves with 1200 gal fuges....) and not a good place to get help.

It's nice to know, also, that this site is all folks nearby who might even frag with me!

btw, how do I find out about fragging parties and such? I have stuff to donate and I would love to get some new softies!
