They are more difficult to read than most people think. I didn't read them until after the first movie came out. After I was done, I was surprised that so many people I know read them when they were young. I think if I had read them when I was younger, I would have missed a lot of subtleties and would have had difficulty slogging through the plot.

I think they are easier to read if you have not watched the movies yet. I always find it easier to read a book before seeing the movie (all Harry Potter's, Da Vinci code, etc....) So that is part of the reason I couldn't get through the fellowship book.
