I've recently heard that the Mag 12 and Mag 18 Impellars are interchangable, so if you already own a Mag 12, by simply purchasing a Mag 18 Impellar, and switching them, you can upgrade your Mag 12 to the 18.

Is this true? Has anyone done this, or even heard of it?

No, it's a different motor powering the impeller that changes the output.
thats what I thought, but I've come across several people that seem to think this is true(and I, being the poor bastard that I am wouldnt mind just buying a Mag 18 impellar to upgrade my Mag 12 with)

I think people are being optimstic here. There is no way you can get 50% increase in output with an impeller swap. With better magnets and larger blades, it might be possible to get your Mag 12 to perform better .... but not 600gph better with the same motor and same 3/4" outlet. FWIW, the Mag 12 and 18 are housed in the same body, so if want to plop down $25 or so, give it a shot and let us know ;)

The manufacturer lists the power consumption as being significantly different which would imply a different motor (as Greg said)...

Not to beat a dead horse....

If the impellars interchangeable, then all you need to do to upgrade the mag 12 to mag 18 is to swich the magnet, not the impeller. The concept is correct, but the procedure is totally wrong.

For some water pump, something the motor is the same for various model, while the impeller is different. You can convert one model to another by swapping the impeller (and housing if applicable).
I did that to some of my Little Giant water pump, for example. Make sure you know what you are doing, otherwise, you can burn up the motor with a mismatched impeller.
