I read in a divers mag yesterday ,that the Maldives was one of the hardest hit by the 1998 warm water bleaching event and 90% of the coral was killed....most dive outfits left the area thinking that the ecosystem would take 12 years to recover { This is what THE scientists told them} yet to the amazment of all, what events followed were not expected......the vast coral sheets were replaced by blankets of algea.....which intern spond a huge increase in the herbivor population.....which next yeilded the greatest explosion of a fish population, from record numbers of groupers to Manta Rays.Even Whale sharks have zoned in on the "action " in record populations scooping up the increased plankton soup...Marking it the greatest foodchain event that THE scientists have ever witnessed and deemed imposible even on a "Healthy reef" The remaining Dive operators are having the best time of it. Oh and the coral, is making a comeback three times as fast as expected. The artical has photos of before and after and of the record fish populations! Mary? do you know of any collectors in this area{Maldives}? thanks.................. Sir Kalkingham.
