With the release of the new movie finding dory coming out it got me to thinking. I've been to a bunch of fellow reefers houses. Mostly everyone's tank I have seen there was a nemo(clownfish) or a dory(hippo tang). Are these the most popular fish in the hobby and if so is it because of the releases of the finding nemo and finding dory movies? If that's the case why don't we all have sharks in our tanks after seeing JAWS. Lol

I have a pair of clownfish and a hippo tang in my tank just because of my two kids (3/2 years old) and wife like the movie nemo.i fought it until my oldest was able to talk and start asking for stuff. I am a sucker for my kids, can't say no!

Clowns have always been popular, since I started in this hobby 35 years ago. Part of it is because clowns have a symbiotic relationship with an anemone.

Early on the most popular fish were damsels. But that is because they were considered hardy and were the recommended fish to cycle a tank. It took a while to break this bit of marine aquarium advice and you still find it in books.

I have never cared much for hippo tangs. Now that I only have a 40 I am very limited in the tangs I can add so I recently purchased a kole tang.

Keeping a hippo tang is the reason I've done 3 upgrades in 4 years. According to my wife, you can't have a reef tank without clownfish and a hippo tang.

  • Started with a 37 - wife wanted to keep one, told her it gets too big, we got a small one but it got too big and we had to re-home it.
  • Got a 3 foot 50 breeder - wife wanted to keep one but hold onto it a bit longer this time, but the fish got too big again and so we re-homed it
  • Now I got a 4 foot 75 and wife is already talking about getting a 200 because she wants a blonde naso when we buy a house in a couple of years.

I guess I'm kinda lucky but it got to the point where I do the dirty work - cleaning, maintenance, water changes. And she does the "easy" stuff like feeding. I also need "permission" before I make any changes to the display.

this sounds exactly like what happened when my gf and i got a dog. She wanted this dog, we got the dog after alot of her saying "i'll take care of it" and now all she does is cuddle with him lmao. i take care of ALL the rest

You certainly picked the right woman. My wife is still on cloud 9 since I broke down my tank last year.

I got so much crap when I started, every time we got a new tank i got complaints on how it's big. Now she's the one that comes home with corals. She loved euphyllia corals. I have 8 of them - frogspawn, torch, hammers in all different colors and types.

Tell me about it! Wife conned me into agreeing to a dog after I explicitly said "I don't want a dog because my life is busy enough- don't want to be walking it every day". Guess who take him out for his nighttime walks? Wouldn't be so bad if at all other times the dog didn't clearly favor my wife...
