We have been through it all with this 6 gal nano now,( salinity through the roof because of crapo hydrometer, heater malfuntion causing sudden temp spikes and drops,PH swings and of course the deaths that resulted from all of the above) Now we still have corals and hermit crabs dieing slowly..... The water perameters are model perfect but due to so many things going on we have moved things all over the place many times and I'm thinking thats what is killing things off ( stress?) Temp-80
salinity-1.023
Cal-400
Alk-3.8
Ph-8.0/8.1
Any clues? mag-1300

I think you're right-on with your assumption that all the swings/changes have caused stress and eventually deaths in your system. This is the primary reason most here will advise against such a small tank - especially if you're relatively new to reefs.

Keep in mind that we measure a few critical parameters in our tanks, but there's a lot more going-on than just what we're monitoring. IMO stability is the key to a successful reef and a very small tank can make that a very difficult proposition.

Thanks Chris- Yes -live and learn huh? We are going to get a turn key 55 gal soon and do it right-We have a good LFS in costa mesa ,CA the owner has 30 years experience and runs a side business of setting up/maintaining tanks all over the place -so we will have him get us going-with the best stuff he can get.

Hey Bill,
How's the little tank doing?

I had a ph leak oil into my nicely aged saltwater, now I've got 25g of useless water, a freaking trashcan to clean and a new pump to buy. If it ain't one thing, it's another.

Hey Knowse- Sorry to hear about that mess- geez, Little tank doing ok,working on the JBJ auto top off system to modify it to work in the nano-just a mounting thing need it to be more secure.Had a small hitchhiker crab we didn't know was bad and was in a hole of one of the rocks and slowly started destroying are pulsing Xenia piece by piece, we had to take the rock out and hammer it to get him out,and re-set all of our corals again. Using Tropic Marin Pro reef salt now supposed to be the best out there.keeping salt at 1.025 . put in a mini-jet 606 pump, and now using Rowa for the phosphate and Purichem (makes the water unbelievably clear) We have a watchman goby and a baby ocellaris clown -still alive for 1 month now.Switched to an all-glass heater so no more temp swings the vis-therm sucked. Cheers...

Hey Bill,
Just checking to see how the tank is doing! Haven't seen where you've posted lately so was just curious.

I sure hope Santa brought you a digicam so you can post some pics :D
