Hey all. I'm in the middle of a new build of a 46 bow. Tank was bought used from a mr member last year and was an African tank for a while. Gave the fish to a local store and started setting up. I had to do this on a budget so im re using some old gear and updating with used gear from here and RC. So I'm reusing an old wet dry as a sump, but I modded the top section where the bioballs would go to be a fuge. It fits in the tight bowfront stand and I was able to save a few bucks by recycling it. It's connected to a little giant return pump. I just got a Bermuda aquatics 3 series skimmer from custom king with a mag 7. I did buy new Marco RO ms and sand, I got the 40/40 package, I have the rock but the sand didn't show up yet. The tank is installed in my basement workshop so it sits on a concrete floor with both a sump and floor drain close by. In fact I plumbed a drain line straight into the sump. The lower sump section holds 4-5 gallons before the overflow. The fuge holds another 4.5 gal. So doing 10%water changes will be cake, I can just pump the sump out by opening and closing some valves. I also put in a. Alternate intake that goes up and over the side so I can do largeer water changes if needed. I'll keep the piping out of the tank unless I need to drain say 20-30% of the tank. Idts hard to explain but I've been testing it for a week and it works perfectly, drained the whole tank in a few minutes tonight.
I have a sweet light i also got from a member it's a 250w mh w 2 96w power compacts and moonlights. N ice casing built in fans w sep switches for all. It's a little big for the tank but I'm going to build a canopy following the video from the guy on 3reef/ YouTube that built one, real easy even with the curve.
So here are some pics

I know bug mess right now but will all be neatened when done!

Here's the sump, the PVC seen in the bottom takes the drain from the fuge away from the return and skimmer pumps. The top section will be the fuge, it will e fed from the overflow box.

I know my unions should have been placed closer to each other but it's fine it works.

Top view of re tentative skimmer plumbing and location

I still have a lot to do but am getting closer. I don't have a big budget and have to make do with what I have. I know there are better ways to setup but j need to keep things reasonable on the startup. The stand is so small that u can fit much in there and the sump us so tight that I had to cut it just to get the skimmer pump inside! Lol
I have a Neptune ac/jr and a tunze 7094 to setup still, and my RODI should be here tomorrow. So if the skimmer flow test works j should be mixing water soon.

The sides are 3/4 pine the tops and front are 1/2 mdf. 2 coats of primer an 1 coat of finish paint so far. It's not metallic but semi gloss. I had taken the door of the stand to hd this weekend and they scanned it and tried to match it. It's close but not quite. The interior is bright white using exterior paint. The goal was to hold my light which is a bit too big and to keep my 3year old from droppin stuff in the tank!

Yeah baby I am finally done with the tank's "infrastructure" did the final full system test last night and everything runs beautifully. Took some effort to get the light into the canopy, could have gone 1/4" wider. Going to drain it and start doing the rockwork tonight, I'll start making RO water Friday. I got a fresh batch of esv this weekend, and my new refractometer from salty critters arrived yesterday, Nothing like next day delivery! Thanks Jim.

Cheesy background for now, hopefully it will be covered by coraline soon!

My modded wet dry. Top section will have sand and rock and be a fuge. Right section will have my probes and be whereby add fresh top off water because it drains slowly into the sump.

Realized this was a bad shot just now. Also that I have no shots if the setup with the room lights on! Doh!

Are ther any members near garden city, floral park, franklin square that have any live rock or rubble and live sand to sell or donate. I have all my base rock and sand but will need some live stuff to seed the tank

This is where all the outlets will be. My friend is coming over to help me run a few circuits w gfi outlets. Lucky enough the power panel is in the rear corner of the shop and the rafters are all exposed so this will be nice and easy

Alrighty then! We have the cycle finally kicking! Been running since Sunday, I put 20lbs of live sand from the store before I filled it and pit in a jumbo shrimp in a nylon bag. A few pieces of live rock with some coraline went in on Monday. Yesterday I added some bottled bacteria bio-spira i think by the makers of instant ocean. Ammonia spiked up to 1ppm w/0 nitrites; and then today I finally saw some nitrite and a slight change in ammonia, so we're going in the right direction. I have a fluval internal filter from my African setup, so I have some ceramic bio media cooking in the sump and am filling my 10g quarantine w ro water now. Every thing is setup, I have 2 20amp circuits w gfi outlets and my Neptune ac/jr is now running the show. I'm pretty happy w the setup so far, I need to setup some ATO system soon. Checked out a new store i never saw before, its across old country road from pf cbangs, called aquarium village, he is runnjng since dec, nice store, goncheck it out.
Well here's some pics:

Here it is under full lights, I'm running my lights at night to keep temps down in the summer

In the pic it looks spagetti-ish but it's neat an every plug and outlet is labeled. Definitely not pretty, but it keeps my 3yo son from messing w the cords!

Fuge and sump, tossed in a tiny wad of chaeto, can't believe how hard this stuff is to find at any lfs

My "the filter guys" RO/DI works perfectly. I finally made the permanent connection w/a saddle valve last night, no more hoses.

been a while since i started this thread, figured i wou;d post some vids etc...
So far the tank is going well, i have:
2 mocha occellaris, 1 lyretail anthias, 1 purple fire fish, an assortment of crabs and snails, an elegance, a plate, an acan frag, 4 duncan heads, and a nice galaxia. Everythign is stable, need to work on the ATO this weekend. I upgraded my 7094 tunze controller to the new 7096 and now i have waves, it changed the tank dynamic a lot, before the clowns just stayed in one spot, now they swim all over.
