As far as I'm concerned, feel free to discuss what you wish. Just do so out of professional courtesy and mutual respect. This is an "Industry Forum", and we are all adults. You guys should know what can and can't be posted. There is only one real rule, and I will enforce it vigorously:

Play nice.

So we can name names and make inferences based on our opinions of individual companies all we want? Just as long as it's kept as our "opinion" and falls under the "play nice" category? Sounds like dangerous territory to me.

Mary,
I think the point has been well made that companies are free to sue anyone that defames them. That alone should be enough to make people think about what they post.

You will of course be challenged on your assertions as well. There isn't very much BS that gets posted here that isn't called out.

My whole beef with this is that RDO could get sued. I have stated in the past that people can ask about my business- I would prefer them to at least do a little research before they ask some ridiculous question or make an unwarranted accusation- but I will always respond. I would never sue RDO over something someone here said. But that's me- I'm here all of the time and know most of the people on this board and there motives. Others might not be so understanding. RDO is walking dangerous territory by allowing names to be named. In the Pet Warehouse suit, the owner of the board was also sued, and if I'm correct had to relinquish ownership of his board. Look, I'm not just in a trouble making mood today. I really think that using names is not necessary and could lead to serious problems for RDO. Remember folks, I lived the Fosters & Smith fiasco. Tim at SeaCare is a very good friend of mine- heck, I let the guy and his whole family into my home for a few days (in exchange for Disneyland tickets- J/K TIM!! :) ) I know him very well. And I really don't think there was anything horrible being said about his business. However, the potential was there and the main problem was that he wasn't here giving his view. If he had been here, it would have been a different story. I know a lot of people probably think that I hate RDO. That's not true. I respect this forum (although not all of the people) and want it to be around for a very long time. Saying "you guys should know what can and can't be posted" is extremely vague and in my opinion opening the door to a lawsuit. But hey, if rdo disagrees and wants to name names then by all means go ahead. It doesn't hurt me at all. And in some cases it may even help me!! So by all means, anyone please feel free to bring up my competition and bash them to your hearts content- as long as it's done nicely of course! :)

With love, respect, honor, and just a little heartfelt emotion,
Mary Middlebrook

Mary, you'll just have to trust us. As moderator it is my job to ensure that the forum and RDO is protected. And I am sure to view every post in that light. Like I said before, I appreciate your opinion. If a situation arises again, in which you fear for the safety of the board, please send out a PM first.

I didn't fear for the safety of the board because of the SeaCare thread. I just thought it was setting a dangerous precedent. That's it, that's all. I won't be sending out any pm's. Like I said, it won't hurt me if some business gets named or if someone names my business. It just seemed like a double standard to me, based on everything I had to go through because of the Foster's fiasco. I'll be naming names in the future now that I know the old policy is null and void. Thanks for the clarification.

Just so everyone knows, we don't sock away $$$$ every month, or buy prepaid legal. If someone sues us, we are going down - end of story.

So we ask all of you to be considerate, and also we require you to take responsibility for your own actions and what you say when you post here.

At one point in the past, we had a poster pop up out of no where and say "Gasp, I just heard that Vendor X sells fish that were caught using cyanide! Don't buy from them."

Well, that's a good sentiment, but we found out that the poster was disgruntled because of a failed business deal with Vendor X. Now that's just not fair! Our board was used as a medium for one person/organization to attack another and someone's livlihood was involved - and that's not what we want.

So please follow Glen's rule, Play Nice.

Cheers
James
