need help\ info on vodka dosing

My brother in law started dosing vodka 4 weeks ago and is wondering if he can do a hugh water change to help drop the nitrates, they went throught the roof since he started dosing and stopped the water flow to his refugium .he has a 220 gallon and wants to do about 55 or 100 gallon water change ,any info will help

i heard alot about vodka dosing and sugar dosing but i still dont get it.does it lower nitrates.if so why when people start to dose there nitrates go way up
