Hello Everyone:
Please understand that this post maybe rather detailed, but I would rather be honest in order to get things out in the open. I have a buddy of mine who owns a graphics design firm and he has just moved into his new office. While remodeling I had convinced him built a fish tank into one of the walls. I was in the middle of setting up my personal aquarium business and had referred him to a local aquarium maintenance company we know from church in order to get him the best deals as possible as I did not have my accounts established. He was planning on having him open house for the new office in Sept. 2007 and he is still waiting to open because of this the equipment as already been purchased there is no way of returning it.
Here is a list of the equipment that I know is coming only have a few sizes:
Lighting
- Outer Orbit HQI w/ (3) 150 watt Double-Ended Metal Halide's, (4) 54 watt T5 Bulbs Actinic, (9) White LEDs, (9) Blue LEDs
Display Tank
- 120 Gallon with 2 Corner Overflows (60" x 18" footprint, 26" H)
- Sides of tank are covered in mirrors as this is display between owners offices and lobby
Cabinet
- Designed and built remodeling (~42" High)
Sumps - this is where I disagree system design
- (2) Sumps one for each overflow both made by CPR Aquatics
1. Refugium unknown size, but know its a member of the AquaFuge product line
2. Wet/Dry have no clue about this product (this is where I disagree)
- I believe there is a protein skimmer, but am unsure of any of the other features
Philosophy of Aquarium Maintenance Company
- Is to run an all natural approach.
I do not believe the Lighting or Sumps will meet the requirements of my graphic design firm as they are looking for beautiful, colorful, and lively of live both during the day and night hours. Sorry to be general as I do not like to do so with corals, but I know the owners are looking to get into LPS and SPS corals once the tank is matured. They are planning on keeping very beautiful fish including the tangs and anemone categories of fish.
One of my major concerns is the possibility of flooding as the aquarium company has just recently had an overflow at one of the doctor's office tanks he runs. Another concern is the way that the aquarium company keeps up his tanks as you will see in below pictures.
Finally, I have a few pictures of the Aquarium Maintenance Company's tank at a local doctors office. I know that this tank is a 75 Gallon with external overflow box, T5 Lighting, HOB Protein Skimmer, and Wet/Dry as the sump.
This is a front view of the tank. Notice the greenish-yellowish tint of the water, I know that he has not done a water change in over a year, plus I believe he does not use carbon.
Here's a view of the right side from the front view of the tank.
Here's a view of the left side from the front view. Notice how the corals are over growing each other, this can't happen with my buddy's tank. I do not know if this is because of the poor choice of corals or not taking care of the corals.
Here's another viewpoint of the corals overgrowing each other.
More corals being over grown.
I am concerned that my buddy's tank will turn into this mess which just can't happen as this is a design firm that needs to keep a high level of prestige. Is this tank because of the poor choice of corals or more to do with the up keep? Also, what should I have my friend ask the aquarium maintenance company to know if they will be able to keep the tank up to his desired standard.
I have gotten the firm to invest in natural seawater as an upkeep during water changes they are considering investing in using it during the initial install period. As this would be easier for the company due to the limited storage space they have in their office.
Thank you for your suggestions and I look forward to hearing back from the group.
