If you eat fish, catch fish, or even go snorkeling just to enjoy fish, state officers say you're the reason they busted a local man.
It happened on a boat ramp Thursday at Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach.
Officers with the state Fish and Wildlife Commission say they got a tip from another agency and were there waiting when Lawrence Beckman returned off the water.
On the boat, FWC officers say they found a hidden compartment with buckets of living ocean reef rock.
Not your typical contraband.
But because of its importance back where it came from, 80 feet under water, reef rock is illegal to take.
Beckman, an aquarium shop owner from Lake Park, faces two misdemeanor counts.
The most Beckman can get is a 500 dollar fine and two months in jail.

Mary I thought you said that fish and game do very competent investigations and that in the US justice would prevail.

Is a mere five hundred dollar fine considered justice in the US?

It is not a sitcom it is a reality.

If Canadians, are old enough to vote, and put there lives at risk in the dozens of UN peace-keeping missions they are involved in throughout the world, they are old enough to determine whether they want to smoke.
(Unless of course it is tobacco which is dangerous to their health and those around them)
Makes you want to think about moving up here, eh!

Just an added news update.....

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/ ... 8210.story

An aquarist was busted -- again -- Thursday for illegally harvesting live rock and coral, officials said.

According to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officials, Thursday's seizure was the 14th time they've had a run-in with Lawrence Beckman over marine violations.

Beckman owns Crystal Reef Aquarium in North Palm Beach. According to state records, he has been in the aquarium business for more than a decade.

Acting on a tip, officials were at Phil Foster Boat Ramp on Singer Island waiting for Beckman when his boat docked, Lt. Chris Sella said. They had been told he was smuggling the marine life in from the Bahamas.

Live rock is the building block for coral reefs. In the ocean, the rocks protect coastal habitats, and they act as a bio-filter in saltwater aquariums. It is illegal to harvest it in the United States and most of the Caribbean.

Beckman had 168 pounds of live rock and coral stashed in a secret compartment of his boat, Sella said.

"He had a hatch where the fuel tank used to be. He took the flooring up and lined it with plastic and filled it with water," Sella said. "If you just looked at it, you would think it was flooring."

He was charged with two misdemeanors, possession of live rock and possession of coral, which both carry $500 fines and up to 60 days in jail.

Besides seizing the goods, officers also took Beckman's GPS system to find out where he poached the rock. If it maps out a course to federal waters or the Bahamas, he could be charged with several felonies.

Harvesting live rock and coral was outlawed because it takes such a long time for the coral reefs to regenerate. Officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the annual growth rate for a reef is in terms of centimeters.

Most of the live rock and coral that finds its way into people's fish tanks is imported from the South Pacific, where harvesting is legal. But people are starting to want Atlantic and Caribbean rocks and coral, giving rise to a black market.

"Because there are no sources, that's one of the things that demands illegal harvesting and poaching," said Andy Bruckner, an NOAA coral reef ecologist. "I'm surprised in Florida that anybody is able to make a living from [poaching] because of aquaculture."

Aquaculture is the legal harvesting of man-made reefs. In Florida, someone can lease an acre of state-owned ocean floor for $32 and plunk down rocks to be harvested later, Mark Berrigan, head of the state division of aquaculture said.

It can take two to eight years before rocks sprout anything, he said.

Beckman could not be reached for comment. But Sella said Beckman told investigators he planned to sell his goods for $3 a pound, netting about $500.

Thanks for your post Missy

Again if found guilty the punishment does not fit the crime.

We are not looking at a hobbyist, innocent of the rules gathering a few rocks for his tank.

Naesco, there's nothing you can do to change any of this, so just give it up.

Peace,

I will stop when:

1. The law prohibits the importation of fish from the Philippines and Indonesia where the use of cyanide is rampant.

2. When an unsuitable species list is adopted prohibiting the import of fish and coral that have no hope of survival in hobbyist tanks.

3. That those responsible for the destruction of the reefs including their stateside partners are held accountable for what they have done.

Stateside includes canada right? You have a marine tank. Like it or not, you have in some fashion financially supported these practices yourself.

Wayne,
MAC, REEFCHECK AND THE CCIF ARE ALL 'ADRESSING' YOUR OBJECTIVES...in fact, as I said earlier in a post that went by the wayside as your 'take back the government' nonsense diverted it. [ It couldn't get a serious response as everyone enjoys piling on when you run that pre-programed eco-speak-schtick.]
One big 13 million dollar umbrella assault on the trades 'inequities' called MAMTI... THE MARINE AQUARIUM MARKET TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVE IS FORSEEN.
Why not ally with them and report back here in two weeks?
This is mostly a reefies chat club. They are where the real inaction is.
See if they'll talk to you!
