NOSEY OVERFLOW eew what to do

Funny, I just asked you what kind of standpipe you're going with in your picture thread! 
I personally have Durso's standpipe (http://www.dursostandpipes.com) which works awesome (had to make the whole a bit bigger after the first two weeks, and it's super quiet now!) and was really easy to put together.
One thing I did add was a piece of PVC after the 90 degree elbow with various slits on it and a cap at the end just in case fish/inverts were to get in the overflow.
Either way, there are other options out there too. But like I said, Durso's creation does wonders for my tank!

3 questions
question 1: How high should I run the water in my overflow?
question 2: Will the durso design work with the intake submerged? seems like air would just get in there and block the water from going in.
quesiton 3: I should, I assume, keep the standpipe at 1.5 inches (the size of my drain)?

1. High, less drop, less noise
2. The intake submerge is the whole idea of the Durso, submerged intake less noise (there's a small hole that to allow air, must tune it though).
3. Bigger better.

Answers:
1: A couple inches from the top is ideal. The higher, the less cascading sound.
2:Yes, It will only work submerged. The durso is made up of straight pipe, one "T", one elbow, and one end cap. You will need to drill a small hole in the top end cap to prevent a major siphon effect. Air does travel down the pipe with the water and can create a gurgling sound. Alot of people use a valve on the return pipe to control the amount going throught the overflow. This will help you control the amount of noise they produce. I actually glued an extra piece of tube to the top of my end cap and put filter floss in it to dampen the noise even further. Kind of like a large venturi damper.

Oh, one more thing. You do have the hole on top of the cap, right? And also, if your return line is underwater (I don't think yours is, at least not yet) a hole for the return line as well?
Make sure you've got those (mine are above the water level so I have nothing drain down to the sump) or else the siphon is never broken when the pump's off (i.e. power outage) and a lot could drain into the sump and overflow! 8O
