I am upgrading tank and sump also, my friend is giving me a 40 breeder that is he thinks 10 years old. If I scrape out old silicone and re seal it can I trust it?

Why do you want to scrape out the silicone? My tank is 37 years old and I never did anything to the silicone.

Thats what is recommended for resealing a tank , scrape just the corners and replace not silicone in between glass.

No its has been sitting dry for 10 years , I am uprading my tank and want a bigger fuge. I dont want to build a system with an old tank that has been sitting dry for ten years.

I would reseal it. I've done it to many tanks, from 20 gals to 150. Just make sure you get all the old out and have the glass super clean before applying the new silicone. You can even use get type 1 silicone from HD and save some more cash

Old tanks were sealed with asphaltium varnish and would dry out. Silicone does not, but good luck with whatever you do.
