Rust is ferric oxide, which is the same ingredient in phosban. So why is it harmful?
Here is a definition of ferric oxide -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron(III)_oxide
"Iron(III) oxide ? also known as ferric oxide, Hematite, red iron oxide, synthetic maghemite, colcothar, or simply rust ? is one of several oxide compounds of iron, and has paramagnetic properties. Its chemical formula is Fe2O3."
And here is a description of Phosban from the Two Little Fishes website -

"PhosBan?
Julian Sprung's Marine Aquarium Formula
This granular ferric oxide hydroxide adsorbs phosphates from saltwater and freshwater. Also adsorbs silicates and dissolved organics. Does not leach adsorbed substances. Long lasting and easy way to control phosphate levels permanently."
