Open Bottom Tanks

I saw a few tanks on Youtube where two tanks are placed together...how does this work?

it works becuase it's a closed column, just fill up a glass with water and turn it upside down and slwly lift it above the water line

Basically takes the concept of a vacuum. You can try it in your house right now. Take one of those plastic take out containers. Fill up Your sink, put the container in open side first. Submerge it fill it up then slowly lift it and the water will stay in the container.

why would that tank be easier to maintain? i don't understand....

ahh thanks for the link. I get it now, but dont think Id do it. Theres enough to worry about with a reef tank as it is..lol. Cool tho!

Yeah I'm not sure I'd trust that much water to the check valve on a pump. If it fails, the whole top section goes out and overflows the bottom.

That was a great explanation...I fully get it.

That's right. What if the pump fails. Even a check value won't be able to hold that much water for long.

The check valve should hold if the pump is off, but if a grain of sand gets in it and sticks it open...

I would only do something like this in an unfinished basement near a drain.

it shouldn't matter if the check valve fails IF both the inlet and outlet are submerged under water, the vaccum will still hold

f that ill stay with the rectangle and open top! those things arent trust worthy
