I'm building a stand currently I looked this up like crazy got advice from everyone.

So as for the inside ( most important, most humid area ) you need to a latex based paint. People use killex due to its mildew stoping nature the white will also reflect the light around your slump if you have refuge so that's good for macro alge growth but I suggest doing several coats to make sure you have a solid barrier from the wood to be on the safe side or you can use garage floor / basement
floor paint that stuff works but I don't like the colors and it makes it look kinda sloppy.

Best thing to do is to go to homedepot and find all the latex base paint and go from there anything with moisture resistance..

As for the outside I would satin it if you want color the use the hardest poly paint like the stuff you would use or shalak ( did not know how to spell that)

If you have any more questions let me know

When I refinished my stand I used Krylon Fusion spray paint. I did about 2 coats. This was 2 months ago and so far it has been holding up fine to saltwater splashes, etc. I just wipe it down as soon as I finish my maintenance.
