Thanks for the advice.
I didn't mean to hijack your thread theMeat
I've had success with potters. Nothing long term though. Longest 8 months. But then again I've only owned 2. I know Pat has had one for awhile. And I know Ralph at AX has some already eating

No problem. This site is about sharing info.
Yeah, potters can make it with proper diet, so can moorish idols, just saying they'r not as hardy as flames because that's the way it is.
Also, size isn't the only factor in determining sex

With flames the coloration and patterns can vary depending on the fish's origin, so comparing sexes on fish that come from the same place is pretty important.
Look at the links to pics i posted. Females have thinner black stripes, and rounder rear fins. Male's rear fins are pointier with more blue.

Update

Been a week and a half. They're both eating very well and healthy. Got them from pets aquatics.
The smaller one hasn't grow but is loosing it's stripes and it's blue. Looks more yellow, vibrant and healthy, and eating everything i feed.
The bigger one has def grown and doing just as well. He has picked up the chasing action over the last few days but the lil one doesn't seem at all traumatized by it.
So from what i can gather on the internet i learned that being the only flame in a tank for even a few days is enough to start them turning male, and once they start turning male even a lil bit that's it they'r gonna be male, seems to not be true. The smaller one was the only flame in the tank for almost 2 weeks. So either she didn't turn male, or they can revert back to female is what i'm seeing so far.

It is almost impossible to tell the sex of centropyge and paracentropyge. Kind of much like clowns except can't use size as a great predictor. Also they form harems in the wild not pairs I have always had best luck as such. If planning to breed or at least allow that option even if next to impossible to rear they need height (at least 2 feet) as they mate swimming up in the water column.

Thanx for the info. Tank is 30" height. Not looking to raise babies, just to have a mated pair. I get they live in harems, but the problem is finding the smaller females, so trying to do a harem the chance of introducing more than one male is greater. .Althou i'm sure some have done it successfully.
