If it starts looking likely that I may give it a go, I'll try a test run in a specimen container with some 'pods in it and see if they suffer any adverse reaction first. Managed to find a handful of accounts of people using it reef tanks in various places on the net, with none reporting any problems from use, so hopefully it is as harmless as claimed.

Good idea about seeing if it effects 'pods! I'd be tempted to give the added filtration a chance to see if if doesn't clear things up-what's another few days?

That's the plan. I'll give things at least another week first. Especially since I added one of those VorTech propeller pumps yesterday and went from "high flow" to "The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost...." currents :D

For really fine particle that stays on the water colume, it must be something unusual, and I am curious to find out.

Any suggestions for figuring out the root cause?

It could be simply that your LR has only been in for a few weeks.

I'm amazed at how much particulate is held in the tiny holes, cracks, and tunnels of my LR. Everytime I blast them with a turkey baster, a whole storm of small particles is blown out from INSIDE the rocks. Given all of the activity that happens inside the rocks, I think they are always producing particulate.

So if your rocks are new, or if the curent is strong or changing (as it should be), then I think all the particulate is normal and to be expected. It will eventually decrease as it settles or is filtered out.
