I have worked in boats in Tonga where the divers catcth up to 30 little tridacnas each at lunchtime and scoop em out with the thumb to make a finger food with a spritz of lemon on it.

They are for sale everyday on the wharf to shoppers and are eaten all over the country as if there were not a situation at all.

They are also aquacultured and for sale on the island by the Tongan Fisheries dept. The ban applies to wild clams for export as local consumption of large amounts is winked at.

Threatened? Perhaps in general and in the long run but "threatened" implies that they are not a farm animal multiplied in the culture business by the tens of thousands.
I wish Javan rhinoceros and snow leopards were "threatened" like this.

A few eaten on Survivor is what... if not token in the extreme. Sure it may lead to increased consumption by reality TV show players....is that the problem? Losing a half dozen?
Or is it the principal of a foreigner eating one?
Or is it the need to feel alarmed when the chance is offered to feel...er...alarmed.

Protecting them from a few of us honkeys while granting locals the right to eat thousands is a strange way to protect "threatened" species.

We are not nearly so accomodating with the locals when they want to eat whales, sea turtles and animals that really are "threatened."

A few years of non consumption would see clam blooms all over the Pacific....something we cannot say about so many really threatened species.
Most tridacnas are soon to be threatened theoretically.... in the future due to doubt as to protecting them effectively...later, .not now. Thats a strange category.

Well, in a real survivor situation, you don't have a producer, cameramen, first aid people, etc. following you around giving you flint, fishing gear, etc. when you win "challenges". LOL. But, being that I hate shellfish.. I"d eat the big unicorn tangs before the giant clams.

You mean in REAL life as opposed to a reality show?

I've eaten em and love em Every one I've had was cultured though. In fact, I've only kept one non cultured one in my aquarium. My very first one was a wild one as back when I got it cultureds seemed fairly hard to find.

PS. Papua New Guinea lobsters are common as no one has scuba or compressors to dive with commercially.
