So i have been doing a lot of reading lately, and getting conflicting views on what your photo period should be. i have read that people have had great success with a 6 hour photo period to a 10 hour photo period. me personally i have read that to long of a photo period stunts growth, so i have been experimenting and knocking my period down from 10 hours now to 8. whats your guys take and opinion on this topic?

I let mine fluctuate between 6 and 8. I noticed that when I left it on for too long -i.e. 10-12 hrs because I forgot- many of the coral would deflate/retract.
For example, my torch is beautiful and spreads out about 4 inches after about 30min of light. But when it gets that 10+ hr stretch it actually deflates to not even sticking its tentacles .5 inches out of it's shell.
Now, that's not every coral in my tank. It's my torch,all shrooms, a few zoas, my grandis palys, a leather, and maybe a few others compared to like 20 other corals.
Now, in terms of actual growth vs retracting ...well, I think my softies benefit, though softies might grow under a lot of conditions.
