I*V=P or I^2*R=P or V^2/R=P. These are all the equations for calculating power so you are right. As far as plasma lighting is concerned, I really dont think it is very practical for the aquarium application. The equiptement to generate the microwave frequenceys is extremely expesnive. Waveguides and the RF circutry is extremly expensive. I Think the new and upcoming lighting for the future is Induction lighting.

First, the light frequencies are fine for coral growth, just not viewing. These things would be great for deeper growout tanks.

Second, the equipment is only expensive because it's being produced on a small scale. Consider microwaves; it's essentially the same technology, as far as powerfol RF frequency production and waveguides go, and you can get 1KW microwaves for, what, like $150?

Induction lighting isn't an answer, it's just a new way to get power to your lights. It'll still be powering whatever technology you were powering before without it.

What I'm wondering is if they can incorporate phosphors into the lamps to alter the spectrum, or use other compounds in the gas to do the same thing. ...Actually, according to this that's what they do anyway, so hopefully it'll just be a matter of time before they're rolling out 10/12/50K lamps.

I beg to differ, Induction lighting is the awnser. They are the most efficent, produce much less heat then any lighting option avaliable, and last up to 100,000 hours. I guess thats not good enough for you?

the people that make light's are still going to ask for big $$$$$ and every one has a microwave . not every one has a reef so the price will never go down as we all stand there with are hand's out $$$ show me a company that will make a light that will put as much light out as a 250 mh. say with a $ 150 per light . it will never happen too much $ to make off us reef head's

That was my point. The equiptment needed for Plasma lighting is extremely expensive. To design a waveguide, you need a vector network anaylizer which can cost up to 100 grand. So you are going to have to pay for the R and D work one way or another. This lights will never be mass produced enough to lower the costs that much. Comparing microwaves which is something that every one has in their home, to a light for people that have for a reef tanks is not relavant.
