I am going to drill my 40 breeder this week and wanted to know what size bulkhead to go with. I am planing on doing a Herby style overflow. I was thinking of drilling 2) 3/4 inch drain holes one for a drain one for a back up emergency drain and 2) 1/2 inch return lines. do you think the 3/4 inch will be big enough i figure i will be flowing around 400-500 gph.

1/2 " return holes? I am not an expert on the plumbing of these tanks, but I know enough that if you are returning 400-500 gph through a 1/2 line you will have water splashing somewhere.

1 1/2" is typical for a return of 600gph..fyi

An emergency drain? ANY additional 'opening' cut into a tank is simply one more place the tank can eventually leak from. IMO, you might want to reconsider this extra hole.

Do get the bulkheads you will be using before you drill, so you are 100% sure of the size hole you need to drill :)

I'm sure others will chime in, but you can take a look through our Tank Threads Forum and see how others set theirs up. Quite a few folks here run 40 breeders. They make a great sized tank!
