This was discussed someplace else, and it was mentioned that the use of hoses will likely eliminate some 90 degree turns, which could potentially limit flow; this was countered by noting that the inside of some hoses are ridged, which would (in some capacity) limit flow as well. The difference/comparison is arguable.

i use both hose and pvc. hose for the drain and pvc for the return.

it's all a matter of what works best for your setup. if you have to bend around corners or weird angles, i suggest hose because if you use pvc you will need too many elbows(which can cut down on the flow from your return)

if it's straight plumbing then pvc is the way to go. also keep in mind that there are hoses that can bend too much and restrict flow. in that case get some heavy duty flex pvc

would hoses eliminate some of the waterfall sound coming from the drain pipe..?........i i had pvc going straight down to the sump and i can hear the flowing water in the pipe......im guessing flex hoses will eliminate some vibrations from the return pump too....
im asking b'cuz im setting up my 50 breeder soon and havent decided on what to use for plumbing yet.

i seen spaflex at lowes today and the also had DAP aquarium silicone if anyone needed them

i'm in the same boat as you with noise coming from my durso. From what i have been reading besides matching the flow with the pipe diameter the only way to stop hearing the water falling is to have a 90 degree in there to give some resistance in the flow to the sump.

Where is the closest lowes from upper brklyn/queens area anyways? Last time i passed the one near LGA they were closing down or something.

One reason ppl dont like using PVC in home is ,the noise it make when ater gos down into it ,so yup it may reduce the noise if you use a hose

also ,for 5 feet of piping ,i would just use a hose with barb fitting ,make life easy and simple .also reduces vibartion from the pump
