I have a 20gal high nano w/ sump that I was gonna sell. Instead I'm thinking I'll make it my quarantine. My question is this. Does a proper fish quarantine have to be medicated? The reason I ask is I am Also considering QT'n all coral from here out also. Basically I want to start the tank as a fish QT, then when my tank is stocked, continue using as a coral QT. If I medicate obviously that is not gonna happen. What are the thoughts here.

lots of threads on this. i look at it this way if you put a fish in qt with no meds and watch it for awhile it may not need anything additional and you can add to dt. if you watch and add something you have the means to treat it.
if you add fish to qt and immediately start to treat/medicate it you might be masking a problem with fish before you can id it

what I would do if you could , Take your 20 gallon nano and when you do water changes to you main system add that water to the nano system , now your keeping the same parameters , add medication to the nano and keep is as a QT for fish only. Corals I would use another separate QT system the same way , maybe some Iodine. mainly I would introduce my live stock with a less light source from your main system.
When I get corals I always dip them in Iodine. and turn off my lights or lower the dimmers. A QT is the proper way to ensure healthy livestock, also fresh water dips are wonderful at killing unwanted diseases, and hitchhikers , just make sure you are adjusted to the correct temp and Ph,BTW Formalin is my choose of meds for fish. And Iodine for corals.
