I have a Question do SPS Corals Suck up Calcium that fast 3 days ago i tested my calcium and it was at 500 ppm, the day after i had got 2 new SPS from Walt Smith and Actlimated them. They are doing very well better than i thought as SPS always die on me, Well the next day i tested again and it was at 350 ppm, Then the Day after that it was 300 ppm, Now I cann't get it to go past 300 it just stay there I dose at night and in the morning. I have 9 SPS corals that are in the tank and 2 clams that i have had the clam for 9 months now. Can some one give a answer I may have to get a Calcium reactor or a Kalk Doser. :?

Even at 500ppm (check your alk. when you see a number that high...) there is not much calcium in the whole tank... depends on the tank size, maybe half an oz. if that much. Now, clam and coral can suck up calcium really fast, and you will need to have a way to add the calcium if you want to keep their growth at optimal. My question is, what are you doing now in term of calcium additive, and then we can go from there and see if you really need anything more involved.

All I can say is my sps would have died long ago in my 200 gal.
without a reacter. I could never keep it up with addatives. Now,
all I add is ioidine. If you can get one, go for it! I've always been leary
of using kalk. Afraid of screwing up alk. and turning my sandbed to
concrete. I use ARM media in the reactor with good results.

I would say yes they can take quite a bit od CA out of the water. Although I have the same problem as you I have about 10 times as many SPS is my 20. I use 2 tsp. Seachem Calcium every other day and 2 tsp od Kent Superbuffer dKH on the off days.

Hello Dave,

Well i found out that my Alk level is High, acording to that i realize that, that has to do with the affect of my Calcium. So I am tring to just add Calcium and monitor my Alk. by testing it.

To the the rest of you guy's I am going still get the Reactor, It will make life alot easier as I service Fish tank all day long, and the only thing i want to do is come home and watch my tank. As I know that yes there will be other stuff to be done it make it one less thing to worry about. :D

ReefGuy,

Your question on "why don't people respond to my questions..."

I didn't think of it till just now, but FWIW, that pic you have is creepy.

Everytime I see it, I think: "Who and what is that?" I think about it more than what you wrote... Is that the Edward sissor hands guy or the lead singer from "the cult" or "the cure" or what?

Maybe if you tell me what that is I could get over it and donate more brain power to your problem.

I think I did see that movie. The one with the "good" vampire and the "bad" vampire and the little girl vampire that gets killed by all the other vampires for being too young?

Vampires would explain the creepy thing.

One thing is, never judge anyone from his/her avatar. ;)

Another thing is that it is very important to enjoy the hobby. Some of us just spend way too much time "hacking" the tank, and forget that the main reason is to lay back and watch our babies. Glad that some of you realize it

Reef Guy- it sounds like you have an alkalinity problem. Have you tested for alk?

Kalk is one of the most under-rated techniques in this hobby. I have used it with good success. As far as alk, I have never had a problem when using kalkwasser. The fact that it can help to precipitate phosphates is a plus too. I don't know why so many people are afraid of it.

I have a nielsen (kalkwasser) reactor on order now. It makes kalk additions as trouble-free as using a calcium reactor.

I have heard about people having great success using both kalkwasser and a calcium reactor, especially for larger tanks.

It might help to use a few periods and commas in the correct manner. You never know, people may get frustrated tyring to figure out where one thought ends and the other starts...let alone try to help you with your tank problem.
