quick qump question...

gatta a quick question. i got a new 46g bow front tank with the back of the tank drilled with one inch piping. would a mag drive 7 be too much and have to have the ball valve shut a bit or should i just buy a mag drive 5. i have an old mag drive seven already from my 72bow but i never had a tank drilled on the back of the tank before, always rr drilled on the bottom of the tank. i dont mind buying a mag drive 5 if it would be better. i dont want to hook the mag drive 7 up if its going to be kinda strong and have to close ball valves a bit. what do u think?

You don't mention how far it will be from the water level in the sump to the bulkhead on the tank..need to know that for how much pressure to deduct.

Also - you should always have a union and ball valve placed after your pump in the event you need to shut it off or disconnect the pump for any reason.

thanks kathy for the quick responce and yes i ALWAYS put valves on all my lines and check valves also. the pump will be maybe 3 feet away... if that. its on a small shelf right behind the tank. i just would rather have the lines wide open to make life easy. here is a pic. sump is directly behind tank which the pump will be sitting right where the skimmer is

Ryan,
Use the Mag 7 and plumb it inline using a manifold. You don't need to use the other outputs of the manifold right now but at least they are magically there when you decide to run a reactor for x-reasons, you can also cut down the flow if you feel it's too much without utilizing any of the other outputs. Will cost you a little more in material but also will always have a use even if you change out pumps.

To restrict water flow incrementally you should use a gate valve rather than a ball valve. jmo

Gate valves are typically used in skimmer applications or where you need to control the flow more precisely. Ball valves are fine for pump flow application but they do make 1" gate valves if you want to use them. They are usually a slip application so you would need to add unions if you want any side to be able to disconnect.
