When i checked my tank this morning my skimmer was going crazy with bubbles and foam just overfilling the collection cup. it was fine yesterday evening when i last checked. i opened the valve all the way and i unplugged the skimmer and re-plugged it but it just kept foaming with bubbles, way too much as the collection cup would fill with water within minutes. i finally took the mod kit off and just put back the original pipe. does anyone know what happened.

Some foods and water conditioners cause skimmers to overflow. What did you add the night before?

I have the ASM G4x and it does that when I feed squid. Sometimes it does it when I feed shrimp. They sometimes go crazy when something dies too.

Asm g3 here. These are the reasons mine has acted up.
1. Salt Creep built up on the air tube.
2. Two nassirus in the outlet tube.
3. Feeding certain frozen foods

nothing died in the tank. i added "red slime" to kill off some red algae i had building up in the refugium. could this have caused the skimmer to go bonkers

Definitely.

i will wait a few days and then try to put back the gate valve mod kit. this never happened before. weird!

What did the instructions say about your skimmer?

instructions only said how to put it together. no instructions on how it works or where to set the height of the pipe at.

I mean the "red slime" instructions

it said one scoop per 15 gallons (i only put in 4 scoops right into my refugium)
even though my tank is 180g. it might cause ph drop or drop in oxygen level.

:wow: Almost all the red slime removers I researched state to turn off the skimmer for a period of time. What brand remover did you use?

I found comments on another forum (not posting the link here) that said the brand you used worked great but did cause the skimmer to go crazy like yours. A water change should help reduce the skimmer issues.
