Recovering images from damaged compact flash card?

Like an idiot, I didn't check my pockets in the shorts I was washing this morning, and my 256MB compact flash card was in them. I don't care about the card, but the 100 pictures I took this past Sunday from our hiking trip were on it. I put the card in the reader when I got to work, and the folder came up, but the computer froze in the middle of the picture transfer attempt. Now the reader won't recognize the card at all. I did see the individual .jpg files on the screen, so it kinda survived the wash, but now won't work at all.

Is there any hope of recovering the pictures?

Just curious, how? Or did it just start working on its own?
