It's about baby steps, Lee. Baby steps...

If we extend this courtesy to grass roots reform efforts, we should extend this same courtesy to MAC.

I put the text from reeform.com into a translator, and here's what it spit back:

Here a new InterNet operational readiness level develops

Lee,

If MAC had taken baby steps like I and many others urged them to do, they wouldn't be in the mess they are in now. They insisted on certifying product without having the proper protocols (baby steps) in place. Now they are reaping the backlash. You don't certify and then go back and fix the problems. You correct the problems (at least the major, obvious ones) first, and THEN certifiy. There will always be issues that crop up after certification- this industry is too complicated for that not to happen. But for MAC to purposefully overlook major steps in the certification process just to get the program moving forward was a mistake. A huge one.

But, what about the missing link? Net training taking place in area X while tons of cyanide are traded in adjacent areas.

I don't know how you solve this, Jaime.

Do you have any constructive suggestions?

What about getting in contact with the Philippines' embassy and try to talk to the official in charge of environment matters. Informing him/her about the situation would be a good thing, it is possible that they DO NOT have a clue of what is going on with their coral reefs. I am working on it. We should bring this issue to another level. It is a matter of international concern. We, OVI worked as NGO in their country, it is possible they'll be interested in having a meeting with us.

An official from the embassy of Indonesia has just moved close to our home.

Now who in embassy would you contact? Try is the key word, you'll be trying for ever (hint: there is NO ONE in the embassy who's "an official in charge of the environment", nor anyone who'd have ANY CLOUT with such matters). But by all means Jaime (yup, spelled your name right) contact the PI embassy in Canada and try to use OVI's clout to talk to "the official in charge of the environment". Please keep us informed on your progress  .

You must live in a pretty ritzy place then, embassy officials usually don't slum it in middle class areas. What do you do for a living? Ah, thats right, you run a NGO, we know how the heads of NGO's live. Why don't you live in Hawaii with Pratt `(IMA) and Holthus (MAC)?

Gresham, Your comments to Jaime are disrespectful and basically wrong. It is possible to apply for small grants from embassies. The best place to apply for funds in the Philippines is with the embassies (Canada, USA, Australia are good ones) situated in Manila. OVI can do it. So can IMA or EASI. The MAC is already doing it. I suggest that those seeking funding for net training do it ASAP.

Peter, your a scientist right? Your job is to interpret data? Did you read the thread? We weren't talking about grants, no one mentioned grants.

What about getting in contact with the Philippines' embassy

How'd you equate the above quote from Jaime into your quot below?

The best place to apply for funds in the Philippines is with the embassies (Canada, USA, Australia are good ones) situated in Manila.

I'll try to break it down for you nhen. I was saying that emassy officials typically are wealthy people and don't live in middle class areas or ghettos, the live in very posh (rich)area's. The next part in easy so I won't go into it.

Peter, I agree that small grants ($10K) are available through embassies But realisticlly, embassy input is not going to solve the problem. It can help but multiple $10K grants have been squandered over the years. Spreading grass roots change, supported by cross visits at the LGU level is needed ... and that requires reasonable financial investment... not vague appeals to Federal involvement (e.g. previous posts) or small scale international cash cows as mooted.

Gresham, So, what is your point ? You implied that Jaime lived in a middle class neighbourhood or a ghetto. For your information, Jaime lives in Pt. Gatineau, Quebec which is part of the National Capital Region (associated with Ottawa-capital of Canada). I would say he lives in a middleclass neighbourhood. But, he is very close to lots of embassies in Ottawa.

Blue Hula, While, I agree that more than a small grant is actually needed, I think that 10K in the short term would go a long way to getting the net-training program going to assist Ferdinand and Steve.

Where I live and who my neighbors are has nothing to do with this forum. The fact that an official from the Indonesian embassy lives in my neighborhood doesn't mean anything. Gresham, your comment is irrelevant. If you have something to say please be more precise.
