I got rid of all the aiptasia and majanos I could see: http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum...69-how-nuke-aptasia-w-o-nuking-live-rock.html

Another problem has developed in my new, empty tank...

These cute little feathdusters that are all over my tank are not featherdusters :hairy: They are brown hydroids. I thought the tubes were empty, but after a few days of cycling, they all came to life :irked:

There is nothing in my tank except rock and sand. Any easy way to kill them all? Hyper salinity, hyper Ph, Panacu?

At this point, I may boil/nuke all my live rock to avoid any additional headaches.

Help! (?)

i only had an issue with aiptasia for 3 days and none has returned.. had the hydroids on older rock and it slowly died on its own.. again only thing I can guess is UV

The aiptasia was easy... A hot screw driver and some joes juice. The hydroids actually scare me more.

Unless some one has a better idea, I may keep nutrients low, run UV, and joe-juice/krazy-glue the ones I can see.

actually come to think of it.. i think it is my emerald crab that got them under control.. I put 2 in my 46g and they lived on the rock there was a forest of them.. in 2 weeks.. mostly gone.

What did you end up doing to get rid of them?

why dont you just toss the sand and pull the rocks out, put them under scolding hot water for an hour then let them dry out for 2 weeks.

then just do the cycle again.

beats the hell out of all the work killing the Maj and aptasia - im sure you still have hiding - for the rest of the life of your tank.

do it!!!

I'm not tossing 120 lbs of sand. I'm too broke :irked: I can boil it though.

Is boiling the only choice? It would sadden me, but the price is right..

What about Panacu (dog dewormer). Seahorse guys use it for hydriods all the time..

yeah man, but what are the chances you got EVERY Maj and Apt in the tank? It will come back in force within a month.

You can keep the sand, just dry is out. Since its new, you dont have any worms or whatever anyway. I know you will kill all the bactria and whatever, but it will come back.

Also, never, ever, ever, buy live LR from people. you never know whats on it. when i built my tank, i used all dried rock. Didnt have to worry about hitchhikers.

I have come up with a game plan. It's the slow, but sure way:

- Remove all rocks and sand (is there an easy way to remove 120# of sand?!?).
- FW dip all rocks. Collect the inverts that crawl out. These will be stored in my friend's QT tank he setup for me. I hope to salvage a lot of bristle worms, peanut worms, and stars.
- muriatic acid dip all rocks (need to research this process)
- Reintroduce the sand and rock to the tank
- Seed tank with buddies super-clean cured rock (2+ years and no pests at all)
- Wait for tank to cure and cycle (6-7 weeks?)

If any one has any ideas or links to help streamline my idea, please jump in.
