Senator Akaka, 82, had faced stronger opposition in the Democratic primary from Rep. Ed Case, 53, who unsuccessfully argued the Senate's fourth-oldest lawmaker had to go so seniority could be built up for the future.

"I love this job, and I'll stay as long as I can," Akaka said Tuesday during final campaigning.
Late in the campaign, the Sierra Club threw its support to Akaka after he pledged to reconsider his support of oil drilling in Alaska. Thielen, 73, an environmental lawyer, had the group's endorsement for 16 years.

Hirono and Hogue wanted to fill Case's 2nd Congressional District seat.
Hirono, 58, aimed at making a political comeback after losing the race for governor four years ago following eight years as lieutenant governor. Ironically, she had defeated Case in the Democratic primary

So does this mean the Case Bill is dead, or can it search for a new backer?

There won't be a new backer found so easily.
As in many things intended to remain undisclosed, this forum on RDO was the one to scoop this story.
If you recall it was the relationship of Congressman Case to his sister Suzzane, a Nature Conservancy staffer and MACs [ Honolulu headquarters] landlord that enabled the plan to germinate in the first place.
The linking of certification to the legal process of shipping fish into the US was an intention of the Case bill and MAC just happened to be in the business of certifying aquarium fish.
[ It was tried in the Philippines and succeeded in Fiji.]
That they were connected to the congressman in this way was pure coincidence we were told. :)
